Here’s What the Year of the Ox Holds For You (+ Some Beauty Tips)

Here’s What the Year of the Ox Holds For You (+ Some Beauty Tips)

Today starts the Lunar Year of the Ox. Well, to get really specific, it’s the Year of the Metal Ox—with metal representing strength and durability. According to the Lunar horoscope, the Ox represents traditional values like strength, dedication, discipline, and courage. How do you know if you’re an Ox? Well, Oxen were born in the years 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, and of course 2021. And if you’re an Ox, you’re in luck—your year will be smooth sailing, as long as you put in the work. Susan Levitt, author of Taoist Astrology tells Reader’s Digest, “In agricultural societies, oxen are reliable and strong work animals. They were responsible for the survival of humanity. So what was happening in this Rat year continues over into the Ox year to complete it, ground it, bring it to its resolution.”

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, I thought it would be fun to do a little horoscope for each animal, with a fun little beauty surprise element. If you want to know more about what this year has in store for you, read on!

Rat

Born in: 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

After the pretty disastrous year of the Rat last year, I think it’s safe to say that we all want some relief. If you’re a Rat, you can breathe a little bit. This is a year to make your career path and goals a priority. If there’s a job you’ve always dreamed of, it’s time to make that happen!

Yves Saint Laurent

Of course, every ambitious, career-oriented person needs a powerful red lipstick. The Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Leather-Matte Lipstick in the shade Corail Antinomique is the perfect bright red that can take any look from drab to “daaaaang girl!” It’s perfect for all the Zoom interviews you’ll be doing this year, too.

Ox

Born in: 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

The Ox is destined to have a great 2021. You can expect to be especially lucky in love and money and spend lots of time in quiet (and happy!) solitude. This is the perfect time to crack open that new journal you bought at Target (I know you have one) and plan out the rest of your year.

Origins

And while you’re journaling and contemplating your life, it’s the perfect time to throw on a mask. I’m especially fond of the Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Hydration Mask. Like the name says, leave it on for 10 minutes and expect plump, hydrated skin once you rinse it off.

Tiger

Born in: 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

I LOVE Tigers. I myself am a Tiger, so I’m a bit biased. But anyway, heads up—this year is going to be a little tough for us. Expect lots of introspection, personal development, and soul-searching in preparation for our Tiger year in 2022. I am a testament that this is already happening to me, and WHEW.

year of the ox
cocokind

This is a time to be kind and gentle to ourselves, and what better way to do that than to drench ourselves in decadent body oils and lotions. I have my eye on some products from cocokind, a WOC-owned business that specializes in ultra-nourishing, organic (and clean) body butters, lotions, and other skincare products.

Rabbit

Born in: 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999

This year, Rabbits will feel the pull towards doing whatever they enjoy—no pressure, just lots of passion, love, and warmth. Sounds like bliss!

L’Occitane
Facebook @loccitane

The first thing that comes to mind for the Rabbit is a bubble bath. To me, there is truly nothing that radiates more warmth, peace, and doing whatever I want than a super indulgent bubble bath. Make your bath even more lush with the L’Occitane Shower Oil, one of my all-time favorite bath products.

Dragon

Born in: 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000

Dragons! Twenty-twenty-one is your lucky year. But don’t expect all of this luck to be handed to you on a silver platter—structure, habits, and lots of discipline will ensure that you get everything you’ve wanted this year.

This is the time to really start curating a dedicated skincare routine, instead of bouncing from product to product (I’m mostly calling myself out here). Invest in a really, really good cleanser, like my favorite Youth to the People Superfood Antioxidant cleanser. Every time I try a new cleanser, I always come back to this one. It’s that good.

Snake

Born in: 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001

The word of 2021 for snakes is communication. This is the year to verbalize your goals, dreams, and desires to help heal and tend to relationships and create lasting friendships.

In honor of your new budding relationships, why not share a sheet mask set with a friend or loved one? Even better, hop on a Facetime call together and sip on some wine as you dish about the latest celebrity gossip. My favorite masks right now are the Annie’s Way Hyaluronic Acid and Seaweed Masks. They’re super hydrating and comfy to wear.

Horse

Born in: 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002

Twenty-twenty was not a good year for the Horse, and 2021 is all about gaining strength and growing from last year. This is the time to reflect on your resiliency and how to nurture your inner child.

Colourpop

Speaking of inner child, I’ve been obsessed with the Colourpop Candy Land collection that features tons of dreamy pastel shades or the equally awesome Sailor Moon collaboration. Stand bold this year, and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t wear glitter.

Goat

Born in: 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003

The Goat (or Sheep) sits at the exact opposite side of the Ox, making it it’s natural opposite. What does this mean? Well, the Goat might be facing a difficult year. But of course, this doesn’t mean this is set in stone. This is a time to buckle down and get organized on what you want (and don’t want) in your life.

Goats are going to need some good energy this year, so the first thing that comes to mind is lucky jade—in the form of a jade roller or gua sha. The Mount Lai Gua Sha tool is made entirely from jade and promises tighter, firmer, and less stressed skin when used regularly.

Monkey

Born in: 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004

Congratulations, Monkey! You’re destined to have a good year full of lots of financial security. This translates to more time to fuel your passions and hobbies, start a new exercise program, and take an in-depth look at your career goals.

Have you ever wanted to start a new beauty hobby? What about some cute DIY? You can make your own oil blend with essential oils, or make some whipped shea butter to use on your hair and body.

Rooster

Born in: 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005

The Rooster and Ox are super compatible, so Roosters can expect a good 2021. This is the year to use all of your discipline, good habits, and organizational skills to shape the kind of life that you can’t wait to wake up to in the morning.

A good AM skincare routine needs a great vitamin C serum to inject a bit of brightness in the skin. The Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder is SO good. It’s a powder that you add to your existing serum or moisturizer, and BAM! You have a vitamin C product that rivals the super expensive ones.

Dog

Born in: 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006

I’m so sorry to break it to you, my year of the Dog friends, but 2021 is going to be full of confusion and maybe some worries. It’s not all doom and gloom though—just be prepared to stay the course and stick to your guns.

Like other signs in the Lunar horoscope, a solid, no-nonsense product is the way to go this year. Might I suggest one of my all-time favorite staples, the La Roche-Posay Toleriane cleanser. I use this gentle cleanser after my workouts and in the AM. It’s no frills—don’t expect any suds or scents, but it makes my skin feel like a baby.

Pig

Born in: 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007

And last but certainly not least is the Pig. This year, the Pig is all about financial success—dolla dolla bills, baby! You can expect to see lots of money gains this year, and you know what that means, right?

Dr. Dennis Gross

Time to treat yo’self! Is there a fancy device or skincare tool you’ve had your eye on? I’m dying to try an LED mask, like the Dr. Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite™ FaceWare Pro. It retails for a whopping $435, but don’t worry, you got it! Just leave it on for three minutes and see a difference in your acne, fine lines, and skin tone almost instantly.
