5 Easy Ways to Transition Your Skin Care Routine For Summer

We’ve all (hopefully) been quarantining for almost three months now right? I started back in the middle of March, and the weather in Atlanta was still pretty wintery.  Our spring was pretty mild, so my transition into spring skin care wasn’t that drastic. But imagine my surprise when I left my house for the first time in a week and it was HOT. Like nearly 90 degrees hot. Summer came into the scene like, “Yes ma’am, I’m here and I’m ready to slay you with my heat.” I was truly not prepared!

So, now that I’m painfully aware that it is indeed summertime, I know that I need to update my skin care arsenal for the hot summer months. Want to know my tips? Read on!

Now that I’m painfully aware that it is summertime, I need to update my skin care arsenal for the hot summer months.

1. Ramp Up the Sunscreen Usage

You should already be wearing sunscreen daily (and if you aren’t … tsk, tsk), but now is the time to start getting serious about wearing it every day, reapplying, and even putting it on your scalp if you’ll be sunbathing. Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA ++++ is the perfect option if you have oily or sweaty skin and want something that won’t feel like it’s clogging your pores.

2. Skip the Harsh Peeling Treatments

In the summer, I skip the harsh AHAs and retinol treatments. Why? Well, more time spent outdoors (while social distancing and maintaining a space of 6 feet or more) means more time in the sun, and we know that AHAs and retinol are notorious for making people especially prone to sun damage. So, slather on sunscreen anyway, and if you have to use an AHA or retinol, cut down your usage to once or twice a week.

3. Get Your Mist On

I LIVE for a face mist during the summer. It’s a super quick way to infuse your skin with hydration without your skin feeling too heavy or sticky. My favorite way to use mists is to spray a bit after each step of my routine. I wash my face, spritz, toner, spritz, serum, spritz, moisturizer, one final spritz. I look glowy and dewy without the grease!

4. Lighten It Up

Have you ever tried to eat a hearty stew in the middle of summer? It’s the worst—it’s way too heavy and it’s way too hot to be eating steaming, hearty food. That’s how I feel about using heavy creams and oils during the summer—it’s just icky! Now is the time to switch to your lightweight creams and gel creams and skin-like oils. I’m a huge fan of squalene oil for summer. It mimics the oils that you naturally produce in your skin, so you end up with a super youthful glow without the greasy feeling.

5. Nab a Dose of Vitamin C

Even though you should be cutting back on other active ingredients, vitamin C is definitely fair game. Vitamin C will give you that super hydrated glow and also get rid of any pesky hyperpigmentation that you might get from sun damage. The SkinCeuticals Vitamin C serum with vitamin E and ferulic acid is rich in skin-loving antioxidants that will help fight free radical damage from the sun and other environmental pollution.
