The Top 5 Makeup Trends We All Tried (& Loved) in 2020

The Top 5 Makeup Trends We All Tried (& Loved) in 2020

We are thankfully nearing the end of what I’ve dubbed “The Lost Year,” aka 2020. I’ve been cooped up in the house for eight months now, but it hasn’t been all doom and gloom—I’ve been ingesting beauty content like there’s no tomorrow. Finding solace in beauty might seem frivolous, but I’m a firm believer in finding your happiness where you can. I’ve been obsessed with trying out new makeup trends, looking up all the TikTok tutorials, and testing out new makeup releases, so I think it’s the perfect time to talk about all of the best makeup trends of 2020.

1. E-Girl Makeup

If there is one makeup trend that I think takes the 2020 crown, it’s the e-girl look. I know you’re probably like … uhhh, what’s an e-girl, and don’t worry, I’m here to explain. An e-girl is a (typically Gen-Z) woman that spends a LOT of time on Instagram, TikTok, and gaming. E-girls are known for applying their blush on their cheeks and on their nose, super thick, winged eyeliner, faux freckles, and coral/pink eyeshadow. They are known for having an edgy, goth-inspired look, but with a colorful twist. Not going to lie, I’ve put blush on my nose once or twice, and it was actually a cute look.

2. Glossy Eyelids

I cannot tell you how obsessed I am with this trend. Glossy eyelids are such a bomb editorial look that I never thought would cross over to the mainstream, but here we are! I think it looks so sleek and sexy, and since our mouths are covered with masks all the time, glossy lids make for a really bold look. If you want to do glossy lids old-school style, you can use a dab of Vaseline, but there are also professional grade products like Gucci’s Éclat De Beauté Effet Lumière, a high-def gloss that you can apply as a highlight, lip gloss, or eyelid gloss. Huda Beauty’s Naught Nude Palette is actually the first palette to have a shimmery gloss hybrid in it—and you already know I bought it.

3. Neon Eye Looks

One of the biggest makeup trends of the summer (both on the runway and in real life) was neon-colored looks. I love that in the midst of all the darkness of 2020, beauty has found a way to be as bright as humanly possible. We have to stan! One of my favorite neon eyeshadow palettes is the Violet Voss Bright Vibes Neon Pressed palettes. The pigmentation is WILD, and there’s very little fall out.

4. Graphic Eyeliner Looks

I don’t have a steady hand and can barely do regular eyeliner, but I loooooove the graphic liner look that’s been all the rage this year. Like I’ve mentioned before, I love to do up my eyes now that lipsticks are out of the questions, so my signature look if I have to go anywhere during quarantine and I want to look semi-presentable has been doing a pop of purple along the waterline, and then on top of that a pink or a green, depending on my mood.

5. Dolphin Skin

Milk skin, mirror skin, glass skin, and now, dolphin skin. Yes, dolphin skin is a thing, and it can be best described as how you look after you’ve gone for a swim—a little bit glossy and a lotta bit dewy. Skin care goes a long way here, but dolphin skin is all about placing your highlighter strategically. Danessa Myricks, celebrity makeup artist and owner of her eponymous makeup brand, said in an interview, “Glow looks beautiful on all of the natural high points of the face. The bridge of the nose, the small area between the brows, the brow bone, the temples, the tops of the cheekbone and chin are perfect points to target.” But instead of your typical powder highlighter, you want to go for something a bit more glossy and dewy to really channel that dolphin wet look, like Benefit High Beam or Iconic London’s Illuminator Liquid Highlight.
