Splurge-Worthy Hand Soaps & Creams for All That Hand Washing We’re Doing

Hand soap has always been a utilitarian buy for me. I would buy a giant jug of it at Costco (Softsoap, to be specific), and use it to fill all of my various hand soap bottles I’d amassed over the years—a few from Bath and Body Works, one decorative one I got from my mom for Christmas, another that I got from Target. And hand creams? I usually just toss whatever one I find standing at the counter of CVS into my cart as I’m checking out. As long as it moisturizes and isn’t greasy, I’m a happy lady.

But now that we’re washing our hands more than ever, I’ve been looking at ways of elevating that experience. I’m talking aromatic scents, luxurious packaging, niche products that I’d never thought to buy, but now that I’m sheltering in place for the foreseeable future, I thought I might as well treat my hands with love.

Oh, and speaking of taking care of my hands, I’ve been upping the ante on hands creams as well. All of this hand washing = ultra dry, cracked hands that can’t seem to get enough moisture.

Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash

This hand soap is designed for “hard working hands,” aka hands that need to be frequently washed, which is perfect for the times we are in. It’s formulated with mandarin peel oil so it has a refreshing, energizing scent. Plus the packaging looks amazing on your bathroom vanity top.

Byredo Suede Hand Wash

Take your hand washing experience to the next level with the Byredo Suede hand wash. It’s not cheap by any means, but it IS luxurious. And honestly, sometimes we all need a bit of luxury in our lives. It has a light, airy texture with a smooth lather and both softens and nourishes your hands. And its beautiful pear and bergamot scent is incredibly uplifting.

L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Hand Wash

If your hands are drier than the Sahara desert right now, this is the splurge-worthy hand soap for you. It’s formulated with 5% shea butter, so dry hands are a thing of the past. Best part? The silky soft texture produces a rich, luscious foam that easily rinses off, with no sticky or greasy film.

Bath and Body Works Island Margarita Hand Soap

There are about a million different scents to choose from at Bath and Body Works, but Island Margarita is my favorite. It has a bright burst of sugary lime that reminds me of drinking a cocktail at the beach (remember the beach?!). Each Bath and Body Works hand soap is formulated with vitamin E and aloe to both soothe and nourish your hands.

L’Occitane Intensive Hand Balm

This is the balm you use when your hands have been through it—it’s made with a whopping 25% shea butter so it’s really rich. I like to use it as a hand treatment. Wash your hands, use a little hand scrub too if you’re feeling fancy, put a dollop of this balm on your hands, and put on a pair of cotton gloves for 25 minutes (the length of one episode of Parks and Rec!). Take off the gloves and voilà! Ultra soft hands!

Aesop Aromatique Hand Balm

I’m a sucker for matching soaps and creams, so you know I had to feature this splurge–worthy hand balm that pairs with the Aesop soap I mentioned earlier. It comes in two sizes: a convenient tube for carrying in your purse, and a large tub that’s perfect for setting right beside your hand soap. It’s formulated with nourishing sweet almond oil and melts into the skin almost instantaneously—no greasy hands over here!

Trader Joe’s Rose Oil Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream

This hand cream is about $5 and feels like it should be 20. It’s absolutely bonkers how great it is. It’s incredibly nourishing (thanks to shea butter and coconut oil) and makes my cracked, dry hands feel normal again. And the scent? It’s an incredibly light, but delicious smelling rose—I pulled it out once and used it at a dinner with a friend (before quarantine, of course), and she couldn’t get over how good it smelled.

Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve

I used to be a server and hostess at Macaroni Grill in college and would keep this salve in the hostess stand to soothe my hands after all the constant hand washing. It’s incredibly thick, but not so much that it doesn’t spread or absorb easily. It’s formulated with rich avocado, sesame, and eucalyptus oils that leave your hands feeling soft and supple. Oh, and one of my favorite things about this cream is that it’s unscented, so you don’t have to worry about it interfering with your perfume.
