I don’t know about you, but when summer comes around, my makeup routine goes out the window. I live in Atlanta, Georgia, where the humidity plus the heat makes me sweat as soon as I step out of the door. Wearing a face full of makeup in the summer is just not my jam—but after spending 18 months indoors, I’m ready to get out of the house and have some fun. And that includes putting on a face every now and then.
After some trial and error, I think I’ve figured out my signature summer makeup routine. Want to know more? Keep scrolling!
Perfect the Base
One of the most important steps in doing your makeup during the summer is perfecting your base. You don’t want to do too-heavy layers because you’ll end up sweating it off, but sometimes lightweight tinted moisturizers can end up looking too greasy.
So, how do you combat this? Well, you want to make sure that your skincare before you put on your makeup is perfect for summer. When it’s hot out, I embrace my lightweight gel creams and multiple layers of toner for extra hydration. My AM routine looks something like this:
1. Cleanse with a milky cleanser, like the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser.
2. Apply a couple of layers of toner for maximum hydration. I like the Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Toner.
3. Then I like to apply a thin layer of gel cream.
4. Finally (of course!), I apply some sunscreen. Black Girl Sunscreen is my current jam. It is slightly heavy, but because the rest of the layers are so light, it’s totally okay.
Powder It Down
After that, I apply my concealer underneath the eyes and set it with powder. As I get older, my undereye concealer tends to crease, so powder underneath the eye is a must. I love the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder.
Then, I apply blush, bronzer, mascara, and brows. I tend to go for powder products in the summer instead of creams because they last a bit longer on the skin. Then, the final step is to mix a bit of translucent powder with a loose powder in my same shade. Using a puff, I apply it all over my face to set all of the cream. Yes, you’re going to look a bit matte at first, but once you’re out in the heat, it’ll melt into the skin and look really gorgeous and natural.
Mist It Up
If you really want to make your look last throughout the whole day, you gotta embrace the makeup setting spray. The Morphe Continuous Setting Mist is a great option, or the cult classic Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, which has been my favorite for at least 10 years at this point.
