In the Before Times, I thought TikTok was a Gen Z-only social media app. As an elder millennial, I was a Vine girl myself, but once the pandemic hit full force, I needed an outlet for fun on my phone instead of doom-scrolling through Twitter. I had NO idea that TikTok is a huge platform that, yes, Gen Z loves, but where you can find amazing, healthy recipes, super cool makeup hacks, useful skin care tips, and of course, the fun dance trend (maybe I’ve even filmed myself doing a few …).
I wanted to highlight some of my personal favorite TikTok trends for 2020. Make sure to bookmark this if you ever need a laugh, a recipe, or a moment of calm.
Dalgona coffee, cloud coffee, whipped coffee—whatever you want to call it, it was definitely HUGE at the beginning of the pandemic. Dalgona coffee is an iced coffee drink that is made using your milk of choice and topped with a foamy, cloud-like coffee blend made with instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. I admit, I was totally sucked into the Dalgona coffee hype. I even went out to buy an electric mixer to make it because manually whisking wasn’t getting me the results I wanted. Once I got the mixer, I made the coffee twice before giving up completely. The coffee is definitely pretty to look at, but it’s entirely too much effort (for me!).

Dreams and Cranberry Juice
I’m not sure if there has been a more viral, more iconic video in 2020 than the @420doggface208 TikTok “Morning Vibe” video. It features a man named Nathan Apodaca, aka @420doggface, riding on a longboard on the way to work, drinking from an entire bottle of Ocean Spray cranberry juice, while listening and singing along to “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. The video went so viral that Fleetwood Mac’s song actually made it back to the Billboard charts and has inspired countless spoofs and funny takes.

I have learned more about how to care for houseplants from TikTok than anywhere else on the internet. Like many of us, I became a plant mom to a number of plants during quarantine, but honestly I had no idea how best to take care of them. I’ve learned how to make my own cheap fertilizer at home, how to get rid of root rot, how to take care of a plant before you bring it indoors, and how to get rid of all the nasty bugs that can sometimes overtake your home. I definitely think I have a green thumb now.

ALL the Dances
Dancing is one of the biggest draws to the platform, with millions of people uploading their takes on the platform daily. Two of the biggest dance challenges I saw were “Tap In” by Saweetie, and of course, “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. I may or may not have sprained my inner thigh trying to do the final split in the WAP dance though.

Nobody’s Gonna Know
I am OBSESSED with this TikTok trend. Seriously, just make your way through the audio tag for tons of laughs. It’s a video with the audio from a clip of Bad Girls Club where one person says “Nobody’s gonna know …”, and then another person responds, “They’re gonna know,” and typically the video is of some person or people doing an activity that is just a tiny big deceitful, like overlining your lips to make them look bigger, dyeing your lawn green, and one of my personal faves—I don’t want to spoil it, so just watch for yourself!
