5 Ways to Love & Treat Yourself — No Valentine Needed

Valentine’s Day is a somewhat polarizing holiday. People tend to either love it or hate it, and this is usually tied to whether they’re in a happy relationship or not. Pure coincidence, I’m sure.

If you’re single, you might be feeling a little bit hopeless since there’s not much chance of getting lucky (in love or just for the night) thanks to COVID-19. Even if you’re in a happy relationship, you might still be feeling bummed because you can’t have the celebration you were hoping for.

Well, this Valentine’s Day I’m decreeing that we should all show ourselves some love, regardless of our relationship status or feelings about the day. We all deserve some fun and happiness where we can get it, so I’ve made a list of five ways to love yourself this V-Day. Some are vanilla, and a couple are a little spicy. Take your pick!


1. Splurge on Some New Lingerie

Even if you’re single, it can be nice to get some new lingerie! It doesn’t have to be super sexy (it totally can be), but even just investing in a soft robe or some comfy silk pajamas can make you feel great about yourself.

If you need some inspiration, I’ve been eyeing several things from Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty collection. She has such a great mix of comfy, flirty, and super spicy stuff.

Another site that I love is Adore Me. You can opt for a subscription box (which is a great self-love treat), or you can purchase one-off pieces. Everything I’ve ordered from them has been of great quality!


2. Gift Yourself Some Solo Lovin’

Whether you’ve got a good collection of sex toys, or you’re a little skittish about trying them, I hereby give you permission to spice up your sex life for 2021. I mean really, what better time than the middle of a pandemic to learn to love yourself a little better?

There are so many options that I can barely scratch the surface, so I’ll just recommend one brand in particular that I think offers interesting, splurge-worthy toys: Lelo.

3. Indulge in Some High-end Treats

If you’re lucky enough to live near a Milk Bar, count your blessings! If, like me, visiting an in-person Milk Bar location is a travel fantasy, then now is the time to hop onto their website and curate a delicious Valentine’s Day order to devour on your sofa with your favorite wine and that new serial killer series that just dropped on Netflix.

If sweets aren’t your thing, then why not order some fancy spices to make your favorite dishes even more delicious? Momofuku is a favorite that I’ve seen tons of friends rave about, and I’ve definitely been eyeing more than a few of their seasonings myself.


4. Schedule a Boudoir Photoshoot

I know that this one might seem untenable in the middle of COVID-19, but there are a few ways that this can be done.

First, virtual photo shoots have become a thing! They can be done over Zoom or Skype, and the pictures can end up looking great. Essentially, the photographer will give you directions about how to angle your camera, where to get the best lighting, and poses to try. He or she will be able to take screen captures of the poses and then send the final edited photos back to you.

Of course, many photographers are working from their studios and just taking extra precautions. Typically, there won’t be anyone else in the studio, and you’ll be asked to bring most of your own props. Everything will be sanitized between clients, and the photographer will remain masked and at the safest distance possible.

If you love the idea but would rather wait until the virus is more under control, you could always just research boudoir photographers in your area and book a shoot for later in the year! Giving yourself something to look forward to is a great treat.


5. Learn to Love Your Whole Self

I think that one of the best ways to commit to loving yourself is to try therapy. Even if you’re handling the pandemic pretty well or feel like you’re a generally well-adjusted person, there are probably some things that are keeping you from living the life you want to lead. You don’t have to have major mental health issues to seek out a therapist! Just having an objective third party to bounce ideas off of can be immensely helpful for personal growth.

Self-Love Comes in Many Forms

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to suck. If you want to skip it, you totally should without guilt. But if you’re just feeling down or like there’s no point because of the pandemic, then I urge you to take at least one of my suggestions (sweet OR spicy— it’ll be our secret). You’re worth it!
