I have a confession: For as much as I harp on how self-care and beauty should always feel fresh and fun, I’m guilty of just going through the motions because I have to.
After so many years immersed in the world of beauty and skincare, everything can start to blur together. New product drops don’t spark joy. Testing a new product isn’t a thrill. My healthy, relatively clear skin gets taken for granted.
Whenever I notice myself falling into a rut, I do my best to shake myself out of it as quickly as possible. I don’t want to lose the joy of Me Time, after all. If you’re like me, and you’ve reached a point in your routine where everything feels pretty bland, it might be time to take your beauty game to the next level.
Here are five fun ways to up your beauty game.
1. Try Prescription Actives
Over-the-counter daily acids are great, and I will never stop using them as long as I can get them. However, once you reach a certain point in your skincare game, you may hit a plateau that OTC products can’t bump you out of.
Plateaus aren’t always bad (in fact, they’re usually a good sign), but since we’re talking about how to level up your beauty game, I think the best step forward is to try prescription actives!
If you have access to an in-person dermatologist, schedule an appointment to talk about which types of actives can help you achieve your skin goals. If you don’t have easy access to a derm, sites like Nurx and Curology can give you a prescription that’s personalized to your needs.
2. Go For Your Stretch Goals
When you’re first starting, your skincare goals might be as simple as, “get my oil under control enough that I only need to blot once a day,” or, “clear up breakouts enough for concealer to hide them.” I think that most of us shoot pretty low in the beginning, and that’s totally normal. Setting goals that are too big can just be disappointing and discouraging!
Now that you’re a veteran who has handled all of the low-hanging fruit, it’s time to start working on those goals that felt unattainable before. Want to eliminate the need for base makeup? Make that your goal! Want to figure out how to clear and minimize your pores for good? You got this!
These are stretch goals, so they’ll likely take a lot more time to achieve than your original skincare goals. You probably have more patience and understanding now though, so you can crush these goals too!
3. Start a Body Skincare Routine
Once you’ve gotten everything above the shoulders looking great, another option to level up your beauty game is to start focusing on the rest of your body. Your hands are one of the first body parts to show signs of aging, so that’s always a good place to start if you’re not quite ready for a full-body routine.
If you do think that a body routine sounds up your alley, remember that you can (and should) approach this routine in the same way that you did your face routine. You can use inexpensive face skincare on your body, or you can look for body-specific products.
Just remember that your body skin tends to be thicker than your neck and face skin, so you might need extra layers or higher percentages of actives to get the same level of results. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
4. Invest in Beauty Tools
For some people, beauty tools are a necessity. For me, they’re more like icing on the cake. Once I’ve done all of the major things to get my skin in order, then I feel like I can start looking for tools to fine-tune my routine.
A popular place to start is cleansing. The Foreo Luna devices are super popular because they deliver a rejuvenating massage along with extra cleansing power.
If you’re interested in at-home toning and contouring, I’ve heard that the NuFace devices are great for giving your face and neck a boost of toning and lifting with regular use.
Finally, don’t forget about your teeth! A healthy, bright smile should be an important part of your beauty goals. I’ve written previously about tools to help you whiten at home, and while you’re at it, why not invest in an electric toothbrush? There are tons of options on the market, but I prefer ones that have a small brush head so that you can easily and comfortably get to every little crevice of your teeth.
5. Consider Professional Treatments
I know that not everyone has the budget or desire to test out professional aesthetic treatments, but if you’re curious, I say take the plunge! You don’t have to deal with invasive surgeries or unnatural-looking fillers. It’s 2021, and there are tons of safe, low-key options for upping your beauty game.
Professional teeth whitening, laser facials, and temporary collagen fillers are all on my future list of beauty treatments to try. I’ve spent a lot of time researching and writing about these types of cosmetic treatments, and they all have the potential to give you great, lasting results.
If you’re a little wary of something so pricey, I understand! You can also take baby steps and start with a professional facial massage or skincare treatment from a reputable medspa.
