5 Luxury Hair Care Products That Are Totally Worth the Splurge

As a plus-sized woman, my hair has always been a particular source of joy and pride for me: It is thick, strong, and—as long as I take good care of it—usually forgiving when I experiment with bleach, dyes, or heated styling tools. Hair doesn’t need to be a certain size in order to partake in popular styles, which is a rare gift for us bigger women, often barred from what is trending in fashion thanks to biases in sizing and cuts.

So, since my hair is one of the few parts of my body I can look at and actually love without needing to talk myself into that love (body acceptance is hard sometimes!), I’ve always been very willing to spend both time and money on its maintenance. Especially now that visiting a professional salon is difficult, at-home care for my hair has become even more important to me.

Over the decades, I’ve tried pretty much every hyped hair product out there, from luxury to drugstore, and have found that spending a bit more on those salon-range, high-end brands actually pays off in the long run. Not only are high-end hair products usually more concentrated and thus last longer than their drugstore counterparts, I also had to deal with fewer flops from those renowned luxury brands.

I’ve tried pretty much every hyped hair product out there, from luxury to drugstore, and have found that spending a bit more actually pays off in the long run.

Now, I am not saying you should only go for luxury hair care if that isn’t your kind of price range, but at least for some products, splurging a little truly is worth it long-term. The following five hair care superstars are all special in a way that justifies investing in them, providing your hair with a range of unique luxury treatments that will make a difference.

1. Davines Authentic Cleansing Nectar

This is one of my favorite shampoos to gently cleanse my unruly, frizzy hair. Not only does the Davines Authentic Cleansing Nectar have a far less “intrusive” smell than so many over-perfumed hair care products, it is also alcohol-, sulfate- and silicone-free—a must for many people, especially curly haired folks.

Italy-based hair care brand Davines is known for their lush hair products and extra gentle formulas. Their Authentic Cleansing Nectar is probably one of the gentlest ones out there, minimalist enough to suit even the most sensitive scalps and strands.

Investing in a high quality, sulfate-free shampoo has made all the difference to my hair, and I love how soft it feels after using this particular gem of a hair cleanser.

2. Kérastase Discipline Maskeratine Smooth In-Motion Masque

French hair care giant Kérastase has long been a preferred choice of celebrities and their hair artists. Famously gorgeous hair-inspos like Jennifer Aniston and Lily Collins swear by the high-tech formulas and luxurious textures.

The Kérastase Discipline Maskeratine Smooth In-Motion Masque was developed specifically for unruly, rebellious hair, and thus is perfect for my always frizz-adjacent, wavy to curly tresses. I love to use this once a week, massaging the thick cream into my damp hair for a minute or so before letting it soak in for at least 15 to 20 minutes. A hair stylist once told me that massaging in conditioners and masks helps to soften hair and allow nourishing ingredients to penetrate more deeply. This is a highly concentrated mask, by the way, so a little goes a long way!

3. Aveda Pramāsana Protective Scalp Concentrate

Scalp care has been a game changer for me, and I mostly have my love for Korean beauty to thank for that. Korean hair care focuses strongly on scalp health, rightfully seeing it as the root for healthy hair. Just like the rest of your skin, your scalp can benefit from soothing, hydrating treatments, as well as regular deep cleansing to prevent product buildup.

The Aveda Pramāsana hair care range has been formulated to take care of our delicate scalps, with antioxidant-rich tamanu oil as one of its star ingredients. Additionally, the Pramāsana Protective Scalp Concentrate contains lactobacillus ferment, which helps to keep skin healthy, and also boasts a whole host of antioxidant-rich natural extracts such as pomegranate and green tea. Caffeine stimulates hair growth and seaweed extract provides hydration.

Use this leave-in treatment on a freshly cleansed scalp when hair is still damp after washing. Massaged into the scalp, this will bring instant soothing and help balance sebum levels, while also providing deep hydration for dry, flaky scalps.

4. Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector

Like so many great inventions, Olaplex was created by two chemists in a small garage while researching ways to repair damage from bleaching hair. Their treatment system quickly became a massive success in salons worldwide, thanks to its unrivaled, patented ingredient complex. Olaplex is pretty much the only product range on the market that can actually repair damaged hair bonds (so-called “disulfides”) on a molecular level, leading to healthier, sturdier, and softer hair.

The original Olaplex system was developed as a 3-step process, with steps No. 1 and 2 usually done as an in-salon treatment before and during coloring and bleaching, though by now you can also get these products online for your quarantine dyeing needs. The Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector was developed as an at-home treatment, ideally once a week on dampened hair before your shampoo and conditioner.

The Hair Perfector is not comparable to a regular hair mask or hydrating pack, and it will not give you that slick, soft feeling you get from such treatments—use the Olaplex No. 5. Maintenance Conditioner and No. 6 Bond Smoother for that. Rather, this will repair breakage caused by heat, color treatments, or bleaching on the molecular level, thus making hair feel more compact and stronger. Used regularly, the Hair Perfector can prevent that “fried” look and feel you often get from continuous coloring and bleaching. It is rather miraculous!

5. Kérastase Paris Resistance Serum Therapiste

Another amazing Kérastase product, the Paris Resistance Serum Therapiste is a leave-in treatment for strongly damaged and overly processed hair. This non-sticky serum-cream hybrid offers heat protection for up to 230 °C and helps to strengthen weakened hair shafts and seal split ends.

The secret of this serum is its patented FIBRA-KAPTM ingredient complex, with six amino acids and strengthening wheat protein. It replenishes lost KAPs—“keratin associated proteins”—which are what makes our hair thick, luscious, and healthy.

You can use the serum on damp hair or as a protective sealant before using hot styling tools. Make sure to only use a tiny amount depending on hair thickness, and concentrate on your mid-lengths and ends.

Do you find luxury hair care worth the splurge? What are your favorite luxury hair care products?
