Can’t Travel? Jet Around the World (er, Beauty Aisle) With These 10 Beauty Brands

Raise your hand if you had to cancel travel plans this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While admittedly, zooming around the world for work or leisure is a privilege not everyone enjoys, a lot of us have had to find different ways to fill our need for escapism over the past few months. For many people who work office jobs, slowing down and spending time at home hasn’t been all bad (for some, it’s been wonderful!). But it also hasn’t made the itch to discover other countries, cultures, cuisines, scenery, and—of course—beauty rituals, magically disappear. Thank goodness for social media and online shopping!

While browsing the Kalista Beauty website, I realized it carries a nice array of brands from around the globe. So, I thought it would be nice to take you on a little (virtual) trip. Ready? Over the next few minutes, we’ll be exploring some global beauty brands from 10 different countries.

France | Caudalie

First stop: the land of croissants, the Cannes Film Festival, and Claude Monet. Caudalie, an immensely popular French pharmacy brand founded by Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas in 1995, harnesses the potent antioxidant properties of grape seed polyphenols. The indie brand also works with other vine-derived beneficial skin care ingredients such as resveratrol and viniferine, and its luxe formulas and fragrances will transport your senses to the Bordeaux region where it originated. It’s one of my longtime favorite skin care brands, and I’ve tried most products in the collection.

My picks:

The Beauty Elixir, a plant-packed mist that can be used as a toner, to set your makeup, or as a pick-me-up during the day.

The Premier Cru Eye Cream, a firming, fine-line reducing, under eye-brightening gem. This was the first eye product that made a noticeable difference for me.

The Vinoperfect Concentrated Brightening Essence, which is inspired by Asian skin care and harnesses the power of white peony to light up your complexion.

England | Elemis

A quick train ride brings us to London, where luxe anti-aging skin care brand Elemis came to be in 1990. Touted as the #1 luxury British skin care brand, it uses powerful biological actives combined with aromatics to create high-performance formulas that are as “near to nature as possible.” Efficacious skin care with aromatherapy benefits? Sign me up.

On my radar:

The Japanese Camellia Body Oil Blend, a multipurpose aromatherapy oil rich in plant collagen, vitamin E, sweet almond oil, and camellia oil. It can be used on nails, hair, scalp, and skin.

The Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, said to be a “splash of youth” that leaves your skin looking more hydrated, firm, and radiant. It has rave reviews everywhere you turn!

The Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, the brand’s best-selling cleanser that cleanses the skin thanks to rose and mimosa waxes, and a blend of essential oils.

Germany | Dr. Hauschka

After a short flight, we land in Germany, home to Dr. Hauschka, a pioneer brand of natural cosmetics. Founded in 1967 by Dr. Rudolf Hauschka himself and Elisabeth Sigmund, a researcher, medical student, and esthetician (among other things!), the brand has a unique approach to beauty. It also grows over 150 different plants used to make its natural skin care formulas in a more than 11-acre-wide herb garden located in Germany’s Swabian mountains.

My picks:

The Facial Toner, which conveniently comes in a spray bottle and smells fresh and herbal. One of my favorite products!

The Lip Care Stick, which instantly soothes and softens your lips while moisturizing them with jojoba wax and shea butter.

The Rose Day Cream, a cult product that contains rose petal extracts and wild rose hips, and moisturizes and calms the skin.

Switzerland | La Prairie

From Germany, we make our way to Switzerland, home of La Prairie. Who hasn’t coveted an item from the high-end skin care line? Its origins date back to the 1930s in Montreux, when Dr. Paul Niehans started developing a cellular therapy designed to slow the aging process. The brand’s proprietary cellular complex has been the focus of its products over the past 40 years. La Prairie is also known for its formulas that contain ingredients like platinum, gold, and caviar—it doesn’t get much fancier than that!

On my radar:

The White Caviar Illuminating Pearl Infusion, which promises to instantly illuminate the skin while firming and brightening.

The Skin Caviar Absolute Filler, which aims to target a loss of volume in the skin, helping restore its tone and density.

The Cellular Radiance Cream, which seeks to minimize lines and hyperpigmentation, while improving elasticity and restoring glow.

Italy | Davines

Next stop: Italy, one of my favorite places to travel (read: eat)! Years ago, while writing an article on how to care for and style curly hair, an expert I interviewed told me her favorite hair serum ever was by Davines, an Italian brand built around ethics and sustainability in the 1980s. It was unknown to me at the time, but with a bit of digging, I discovered that it is not only well-known but also extremely beloved by its adopters.

On my radar:

The LOVE Shampoo, meant to turn frizzy hair into beautifully smooth locks. Adding this to my want list immediately.

The Spotlight Circle, a hair mask that comes in a colorful pouch and promises to add tons of shine without weighing down strands.

The Moisturizing Balm, which can be used on your hair, face, or body. Sounds like the perfect multi-tasker to me!

Korea | Sulwhasoo

Phew! That flight was quite a bit longer, but finally, here we are in Korea. If you’re into Asian skin care, chances are you’ve seen photos of Sulwhasoo’s elegant jars and gorgeous product textures on your Instagram feed. Or maybe its products have already found a permanent spot on your bathroom counter. I have not yet had the pleasure of trying any products from this brand, which draws its inspiration from Korean herbal medicine and uses blends of indigenous herbs. But it shouldn’t be long before I cave.

On my radar:

The First Care Activating Serum, which contains a mix of Korean herbs in a formula designed to hydrate and nourish the skin, while boosting any products applied afterward.

The Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream, which mixes red ginseng and retinol, and promises to give your skin that über-coveted glow.

The Overnight Vitalizing Mask, a skin care cult fave that aims to intensely moisturize and nourish your skin overnight.

Japan | Shiseido

A short plane ride from there brings us to Japan, where we indulge in hot springs, deliciousness at every turn, and of course, J-beauty (or Japanese beauty). Founded nearly 150 years ago, Shiseido is one of the OG Japanese skin care and makeup brands, selling everything from its famous Eudermine lotion and cold cream, to the high-end products it makes today. From advanced sun care and skin care to makeup, Shiseido is a brand both rooted in tradition and on the cutting edge of innovation.

My picks:

The Eudermine Revitalizing Essence (one of the brand’s oldest and most iconic products, which debuted in 1897) moisturizes, softens, and brightens the skin.

The Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate, which amps ups the efficacy of your serums and moisturizers while strengthening your skin.

The Bio-Performance Glow Revival Eye Treatment, a high-tech formula which targets dark circles, uneven skin tone, and puffiness.

Australia | Aesop

From Asia, we hop over to Australia and visit with Aesop, whose minimalist packaging and beautifully designed stores are legendary, as are its coveted skin, hair, and body products. The gender-neutral brand was founded in 1987 and is based in Melbourne, and now enjoys a cult following around the world.

My picks:

The Sublime Replenishing Night Masque, which boasts vitamins B, C, E, and F. It thoroughly hydrates the skin and smells like a day at the spa. Love!

The Deodorant, a unisex spray formula that reduces and masks odors thanks to a blend of woody and herbal essential oils.

The Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser, which is super gentle and has a mild exfoliating action due to the lactic acid in the formula.

Canada | The Ordinary

After a looong trip back to North America, we finally land in Canada. Known for its wide variety of formulas, simple vials, and super affordable price point, The Ordinary is a favorite among skin care enthusiasts. But did you know it hails from the Great White North? The sheer number of product options the brand offers is enough to make you giddy (or maybe a little anxious, if you’re a newbie). The good news: many of them are priced under $10, so chances are you can afford to try more than one!

On my radar:

The Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, because why wouldn’t you want to add an extra hydrating step to your routine?

The Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, which I’ve seen influential Instagrammers use as a scalp treatment; I want to try it, too!

The Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% because very-gentle-to-no exfoliation is a new skin care direction I’ve been exploring lately—and loving.

U.S.A. | Fresh

And finally, we make our way back to the U.S. Founded in 1991 by Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg in Boston, Fresh needs little introduction. Over the last 30 years, the brand has built a reputation for offering effective products with dreamlike textures and scents. From skin care and body care to fragrances, it’s hard not to get addicted to this beautiful indie brand’s products.

My picks:

The Soy Face Cleanser, a longtime favorite formula that is extremely gentle and never strips the skin.

The Vitamin Nectar Glow Cream, whose formula with vitamins C, E, and B5 gave me the glowiest skin ever.

The Sugar Lip Treatment in any variation or color for its mouthwatering scent and lip-smoothing formula.

What are some of your favorite global beauty brands?
